In the District Reports

Number of schools in this district whose students met or exceeded the standard compared with similar students statewide

WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT

These tables, on page 2 of the district reports, show the number of schools in the district at each level (elementary, middle, and high school) and how well the students in these schools performed on four of the state’s nine assessments when compared with similar students statewide. In other words, the tables show how many schools in each district had students who performed worse than similar students statewide, how many had students who performed the same as similar students statewide, and how many had students who performed better than similar students statewide.

WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR

Ideally, a district would like to show that most of its schools have students who perform better than similar students statewide, which would indicate that the district is doing a good job educating its students given the particular socioeconomic challenges that its students face.

In the State Report:

The results of each school’s modeling are shown in a table consisting of bands of schools that perform similar to one another – by elementary-, middle-, and high-school levels. These are called the value-added lists.

Colored dots and black diamonds

Those schools who last year performed consistently above the statistical projection across all subtests – the top band of all three lists – and those schools who performed consistently below on all modeled subtests – the bottom band – are noted with a mark to the left. The purple-colored dot indicates the schools whose students performed above their counterparts statewide and the bold black diamond indicates those schools whose students performed below similar students statewide.
